We plan around granite, slopes, shorelines, and freeze-thaw as a matter of course, and we quote what the site actually needs — not what a catalogue says it should cost. Three notes from real jobs show what that means.
Partway into a 350 sq ftgranite walkway, the ground under the dig turned out to be old backfill — soil we didn’t trust to hold a base. So we kept digging: 14″ down, to undisturbed soil, at our own cost. Nobody would have seen the difference for years. That was the point.
Granite taught us a lesson on that same job. Limestone chips clean; granite doesn’t. So we stopped chipping and sawed every joint instead, with specialty diamond blades, and fitted the stones by hand. When the material refuses your habits, you change the habits — not the standard.
The longest job in our books is a marina rebuild — 330+ hours on docks and piers, logged hour by hour, each pier laser-levelled. Slow, honest work in a place where water finds every shortcut.
