Lighting done properly
Great lighting is the difference between a dark lot and a landscape. We design and install low-voltage architectural and landscape lighting — path lights, tree uplighting, step and rail lighting, dock and shoreline lighting — layered so the property reads beautifully from the water and from the road.

The question — The layers
What should the property look like from the water?
Every fixture is solid brass with a warm LED lamp, running at twelve volts off one transformer and one timer.

Sheet A-205 — Process note
How we design lighting
We start with a site walk at dusk — that is when you can see what the property actually does at night. From that walk comes a plan: fixture layout, transformer sizing, controls. We trench and bury the wire runs, set the fixtures, then come back after dark to aim every one. Uplights get aimed at the tree, not past it into the sky. The last step is standing at the end of the dock and looking back — if the property doesn't read right from the water, we are not done.
Materials we trust
Solid brass fixtures — they weigh something, they take a knock, and they age to a patina instead of peeling. LED lamps throughout, warm in colour. Marine-grade fittings for docks and shoreline. Low-voltage direct-burial cable, trenched and buried, with a properly sized transformer and a smart timer so the system runs itself through the seasons.

Before we can put a number on it
Four things decide a lighting quote. We walk them with you on site — bring what you have and we'll find the rest.
Trench and bury the runs, set the fixtures by day, aim every one of them after dark — then stand at the end of the dock and look back.
- A-205.01The dusk walk
- We start at dusk, because that is when you can see what the property actually does at night.
- A-205.02Locates
- Trenching is ground disturbance, so Ontario One Call locates are required before we open any ground — same as fence posts, same five business days.
- A-205.03Power
- One properly sized transformer and a smart timer, with the runs sized to them. Adding a fixture later is a connection, not an electrician's rough-in.
- A-205.04Neighbours
- Dark-sky-conscious aiming means light lands on the path, the stone, the trunk of the tree — not in a neighbour's window or out over the water.

Straight answers
Questions we get about lighting
Why low-voltage?
Twelve volts is safe around docks, shorelines, kids, and dogs — a cut cable is an inconvenience, not an emergency. It is also flexible: adding a fixture later is a connection, not an electrician's rough-in. Everything runs off one transformer and one timer. For landscape and architectural work there is no argument left for line voltage.
Do I have to buy a design, or can you just add some lights?
We add fixtures to existing systems all the time. For a new property we start with the $450 design — a site walk at dusk, a layout plan, transformer sizing, and a control plan. Lighting bought fixture by fixture tends to end up as a runway of path lights. The design is what makes it read as one property at night.
Does burying the wire mean utility locates?
Yes. Trenching is ground disturbance, and Ontario One Call locates are required by law before we open any ground — same as fence posts. The request is free, filed online, and takes five business days, and we build that into the schedule.
Will it glare across the lake?
Not the way we aim it. Dark-sky-conscious aiming means light lands on the property — the path, the stone, the trunk of the tree — not in a neighbour's window or out over the water. Shielded fixtures, warm lamps, aimed at night by someone standing where your neighbour would be.
What does it cost to run?
Very little. LED fixtures draw a few watts apiece — a whole system often totals less than one old incandescent porch bulb did. The timer runs it on your schedule, so it is on when it matters and off when it doesn't.
