Fences done properly

Every fence we build is designed for its site — the grade, the trees, the sightlines to the water. From cedar privacy fencing to black aluminum that disappears against the treeline, we build fences that suit cottage country and stand up to its winters. Custom means custom: your layout, your materials, your gates.

The question — Privacy, or the view

SOLID → SEE-THROUGH

How much do you want to see through it?

Posts are set below the frost line in concrete, with gravel at the base so water drains instead of sitting.

  1. Cedar privacy — 6′

    $95/ ft

Solid cedar at full height. Warm, private, and it asks for a re-stain every few years.

  2. Cedar semi-private — 5′

    $82/ ft

The same cedar, a foot lower, and semi-private rather than solid.

  3. Black aluminum — 5′

    $110/ ft

See-through and close to maintenance-free. It disappears against the treeline, which is why it is the usual pick along the water.

  4. Split rail / farm

    $42/ ft

A marked boundary rather than a barrier.

Sheet A-201 — Process note

How a fence goes in

A fence is a layout job before it is a carpentry job. We walk the line with you, mark it, and file the Ontario One Call locate request — the law gives utilities five business days to mark, so we build that into the schedule. Posts go in first: below the frost line, in concrete, with gravel at the base so water leaves. Where we hit granite before we hit depth, we drill and pin to the rock instead of fighting it. The concrete cures before a single rail goes on. Then rails, boards, and hardware — gates always last, hung to swing true after everything else has settled.

Materials we trust

Fences — material key

Western red cedar for wood fences — it takes stain well and holds off rot longer than anything else we can get at a fair price. Powder-coated aluminum for the fences that should disappear against the trees. Hot-dipped galvanized or stainless fasteners, never plain steel — plain steel streaks cedar black in two seasons. Concrete below frost on every post.

Before we can put a number on it

Four things decide a fences quote. We walk them with you on site — bring what you have and we'll find the rest.

Layout, locates, then posts. The concrete cures before a single rail goes on; gates are hung last, after everything has settled.

Questions we get about fences

Do fence posts really need utility locates?

Yes. Ontario law requires a locate from Ontario One Call before any digging — even one post, even a shallow one, even replacing a post that is already there. Requests are free, filed online, and utilities get five business days to mark. We file the request when we book your job and we don't dig without valid locates.

How deep do the posts go?

Below the frost line. Four feet is the working depth in this part of Ontario. A post that stops short of that will heave the first winter and lean by the third. We dig to depth, set the post in concrete, and put gravel at the base so water drains instead of sitting.

What happens when you hit rock?

In this country, we often do. Where granite shows up before full depth we don't force it — we drill the rock and pin the post to it. Rock doesn't heave, so a pinned post is as solid as a deep one. It is one reason we quote after walking the site, not from an aerial photo.

Cedar or aluminum — how do I choose?

Cedar is warm, private, and costs less up front — $82 to $95 a foot against about $110 for aluminum. It asks for a re-stain every few years. Aluminum is see-through, close to maintenance-free, and disappears against the treeline, which is why it is the usual pick along the water. Many properties end up with some of each: cedar where you want privacy, aluminum where you want the view.

Can the fence go right on the property line?

Only once the line is certain. We look for survey pins and ask for your survey before layout; if the line is in doubt, settle it first — moving a fence costs far more than finding a bar. Municipal by-laws set fence heights, and for true line fences Ontario's Line Fences Act can come into play between neighbours. We check before we dig.
