Railings done properly
A railing should make the deck safer without stealing the reason you built it. We install frameless and posted glass railing systems, aluminum, and custom wood railings — measured precisely, anchored properly, and finished cleanly. If the view is the point, glass is the answer.
Specification — Railings
- A-204.01Frameless and topless glass systems for uninterrupted water views
- A-204.02Tempered, code-compliant glass rated for guard use

The question — How much rail you see
How much should the rail disappear?
Every glass system is tempered and rated for guard use, with stainless hardware near the water.

Sheet A-204 — Process note
How a railing goes on
Glass doesn't forgive guesswork, so we measure after the deck is finished — every post location and stair angle taken from the built thing, not the drawing. Panels and posts are fabricated to those numbers. Anchoring is done for guard loads, into solid framing, and finished so nothing shows that doesn't need to. Then the glass is set, gapped evenly, and checked panel by panel. No gaps, no rattles.
Materials we trust
Tempered glass rated for guard use — 10 mm panels on our posted systems, heavier where the span calls for it. Powder-coated aluminum posts and rails that live outdoors without complaint. Stainless hardware near the water; anything less streaks. Clear cedar where a wood rail suits the cottage better than metal ever will.

Before we can put a number on it
Four things decide a railings quote. We walk them with you on site — bring what you have and we'll find the rest.
Measured after the deck is finished, fabricated to those numbers, then set and gapped panel by panel.
- A-204.01The deck first
- Glass doesn't forgive guesswork. We measure every post location and stair angle off the finished deck, not off the drawing.
- A-204.02Exposure
- A guard has to resist set loads under the Building Code, and open water adds real wind on top. That drives panel thickness, span, and anchoring.
- A-204.03Retrofit
- Glass loads the deck edge more than a wood rail did, so on an existing deck we check the rim framing and blocking first and stiffen it if it needs it.
- A-204.04Cleaning
- Pollen season and rain spotting are real. A squeegee handles it in minutes — topless systems shed water a little cleaner, posted systems forgive neglect a little longer.

Straight answers
Questions we get about railings
Is glass safe in the wind coming off the lake?
It is when it is specified for it. A railing is a guard under the Building Code — it has to resist set loads, and open water adds real wind on top. That drives panel thickness, span, and anchoring. We size the system for the exposure at your site, and on big-water frontage we walk you through the panel layout before we quote frameless.
Frameless or posted — what's the real difference?
Posted systems hold the glass between aluminum posts — strong, serviceable, $275 a foot. Frameless holds structural glass with no posts at all — the cleanest view there is, at $425 a foot, because the glass is doing the structural work. From a chair on the deck, posted glass already gives you the water. Frameless is for when the rail should vanish entirely.
Can you put glass on my existing deck?
Usually. Glass loads the deck edge more than a wood rail did, so we check the rim framing and blocking first and stiffen it if it needs it. Retrofits are a regular part of our railing work — most decks worth keeping are worth the view back.
What if a panel ever breaks?
Tempered glass doesn't crack — on the rare failure it goes all at once, into small pellets rather than shards. That is what it is designed to do. We supply a replacement panel, fabricated to the same size, installed for $385.
How much cleaning does it honestly take?
Some. Pollen season and rain spotting are real, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. A squeegee or a water-fed brush handles it in minutes. Topless systems shed water a little cleaner; posted systems forgive neglect a little longer. We are straight about the trade-off.
