Plant & equipment — Muskoka, Georgian Bay & BarrieHire the machine with him on it. Or take a trailer.

One work machine, a quick-attach plate and a set of tools for it — hired by the hour with the operator on board. Grading, post holes, trenching, site prep, moving stone, storm cleanup and winter lanes. The enclosed trailers rent dry; the machine never does.

02 PRODUCTS

One of these is his time. The other is his asset.

They carry different obligations, so they are sold differently and they are written down differently. Read the one you are actually buying.

Operated hire

You are buying his hours.

He arrives with the machine, he runs it, and he takes it home. It stays on his insurance and nothing about the work transfers to you. Priced by the hour with a minimum, and the float — getting the machine there and back — shown as its own line.

Dry rental

You are taking the asset away.

The trailer leaves in your name, on your hitch. That means a deposit, proof of insurance, a tow vehicle actually rated for the load, and condition photographs at out and back. Priced by the day, the week or the month.

Not offered

The machine does not go out on its own.

The Toolcat leaves the yard with him on it, every time. A 61 hp machine running an auger or a trencher in untrained hands is the largest risk this business can create, and general liability commonly excludes equipment rented out to others. The trailers go out dry. The machine goes out operated.

What the machine is hired to do

Numbered in the order of the working year: lane grading when the frost comes out, digging through the season, and the snow contract that fills the quarter the trades cannot.

06 PUBLISHED FIGURES

2014 Bobcat Toolcat 5600

A four-wheel-drive work machine: loader arms on a quick-attach plate at the front, a dump cargo box behind, and hydraulics for powered tools. Small enough for a finished residential yard, road-capable between buildings on a big property.

What it is not

Not an excavator
It augers and trenches at shallow depth. It does not dig a footing trench to frost depth, and it does not work a trench box. If that is your job, we will tell you and you should hire an excavator.
It still weighs 5,685 lb
Rubber tyres and a light machine mark soft turf all the same. Ground condition is the first question we ask, and on wet ground the honest answer is sometimes to wait a week.
Depth and diameter are the job's, not the machine's
Auger bit size and dig depth are settled against your build before the day, not assumed from a catalogue.

08 WORKS

One carrier. What goes on the front decides the job.

Pick the work you need — the tool for it is named underneath, and its own sheet says what it costs and what we need to know first.

Operated hire

Cullen runs the machine and changes the attachment on site. You are buying hours of work, not the machine — nothing is released to you and no liability transfers.

Pick the work you need and the tool for it is named here.

Every one of these is its own sheet in the register above — what the work is, how it is priced, what a typical job looks like, and what we need to know before we can book it.

OPERATED HIRE

What it costs to have the machine on your site

Quoted per job

Operator included

You are hiring the machine with him on it. He runs it, it stays on his insurance, and nothing about the work transfers to you.

Stated with your date
Every hire has one. You see the figure when we confirm the date — never after the work.
Float — machine to site and back

Mobilisation is its own line, not something buried in the hourly rate. Georgian Bay and Muskoka distances are real and we would rather show them than hide them.
Attachment changes on site
No second visit
The quick-attach is the point of this machine: augering, grading and hauling can all happen on the same visit.

Before we roll

  • Access measured — the narrowest gate, gap or lane the machine has to pass.
  • Ground condition agreed — lawn, septic bed, new sod and soft spring ground are settled before the day, not discovered on it.
  • Somewhere for the spoil — off site, stockpiled, or spread. It has to go somewhere.
  • Locates cleared where anything is being dug (Ontario One Call — five business days).

HST shown as its own line. Price honoured as quoted.

Book the machine

Tell us the site and roughly what needs doing. We reply with a date and what it will take — hours, minimum and float shown before you commit.

No obligation — we reply within one business day.

Why the float is a separate line

Getting the machine to your property and home again is real work and real diesel, and cottage-country distances are not small. A rate that folds mobilisation into the hour looks cheap to a homeowner and reads dishonest to a contractor who knows the machine had to be trailered in. So it is shown on its own, every time.

The same goes for the minimum. Every hire has one; you see the number when the date is confirmed, not after the work.

HOURS + FLOAT

Hiring the machine for work we are already quoting — a fence line, a deck, a patio — is usually a line inside that quote instead of a separate hire. See the trades.
