Sheet A-511 — The work
Driveway and lane grading
Cottage-country lanes wash out every spring: the crown flattens, the water stops running off and starts running down the middle, and the potholes get deeper every week until someone cuts them out properly. A grading attachment cuts the high ground back into the low, re-establishes the crown and the shed, and spreads new gravel evenly instead of in the heaps a truck leaves. It is an annual job on most private lanes, and it is cheaper than the year you leave it.
Who buys this
- Cottage owners with a private lane
- Property managers with several driveways on one road
- Anyone whose gravel is now in the ditch
Sequence on site — in order
- Walk the lane and find where the water is actually going.
- Cut the high shoulders and the pothole edges back to sound base.
- Re-establish the crown and the cross-fall so water leaves the surface.
- Spread and level new gravel where the base has gone.
- Final pass, and a sweep of the apron where the lane meets the road.
What driveway and lane grading costs
Sheet A-511 — Operated hire — the machine with an operator
What a grading visit costs
Quoted per job
Operator included
You are hiring the machine with him on it. He runs it, it stays on his insurance, and nothing about the work transfers to you.
- Operator
- Included
- You are buying hours of work with him running the machine. Nothing is released to you and no liability transfers.
- Minimum charge
- Stated with your date
- Every hire has one. You see the figure when we confirm the date — never after the work.
- Float — machine to site and back
- Charged separately
- Mobilisation is its own line, not something buried in the hourly rate. Georgian Bay and Muskoka distances are real and we would rather show them than hide them.
- Attachment changes on site
- No second visit
- The quick-attach is the point of this machine: augering, grading and hauling can all happen on the same visit.
- Gravel and material
- At cost, or yours
- Material is quoted separately from the machine hours. If the pile is already on site there is nothing to add.
Before we roll
- Access measured — the narrowest gate, gap or lane the machine has to pass.
- Ground condition agreed — lawn, septic bed, new sod and soft spring ground are settled before the day, not discovered on it.
- Somewhere for the spoil — off site, stockpiled, or spread. It has to go somewhere.
- Locates cleared where anything is being dug (Ontario One Call — five business days).
HST shown as its own line. Price honoured as quoted.

How it is sold
By the hour, with a minimum and the float shown separately.
How far the base has gone decides the day. A lane that only needs recrowning is a short visit; one that needs new material and a soft spot dug out is not.
Sheet A-511 — Typical job
What a typical lane looks like
- A private lane off a township road, one season past its last grade.
- Two or three washed sections, a soft spot near the culvert, and gravel that has migrated to the shoulders.
- Half a day on the machine, plus gravel if the base is gone.
- Booked again the following spring — this is a repeat job, not a rescue.
The machine is new to the business this season, so there are no record photographs filed against it yet. We photograph work as jobs wrap up — the rest of the book is open.
Before we can book it — 04 questions
- A-511.01Access
- How the machine gets in, and the narrowest point on the way.
- A-511.02Gravel
- Whether you want material supplied or you already have a pile on site.
- A-511.03Culverts and edges
- Where the culverts, marker stakes and buried services sit, so nothing gets caught by the blade.
- A-511.04Timing
- After the frost is out and the lane has drained. Grading a frozen or saturated lane wastes your money.
