05 OPERATIONS

Stone, soil and material moving

Material always gets dropped where the truck can reach, which is never where the work is. Pallet forks and a 2,000 lb cargo box move flagstone, armour stone, pavers, screenings, sand, base gravel, topsoil and mulch from the driveway to the back of the property — down a lane, around a cottage, across a lot the delivery truck was never getting into. Ten yards of mulch is a day with a wheelbarrow and an hour with the box.

Who buys this

  • Masons and landscapers with a delivery in the wrong place
  • Homeowners taking on their own patio or garden work
  • Anyone with a lakeside or back lot a truck cannot reach

Sequence on site — in order

  1. Route walked from the drop point to the work face.
  2. Ground protected where the route crosses lawn or interlock.
  3. Pallets and stone moved on the forks; loose material in the box.
  4. Material stacked or spread where you actually want it.
  5. Drop point swept clean before we leave.

What stone, soil and material moving costs

OPERATED HIRE

What a material-moving day costs

Quoted per job

Operator included

You are hiring the machine with him on it. He runs it, it stays on his insurance, and nothing about the work transfers to you.

Operator
Included
You are buying hours of work with him running the machine. Nothing is released to you and no liability transfers.
Minimum charge
Stated with your date
Every hire has one. You see the figure when we confirm the date — never after the work.
Float — machine to site and back
Charged separately
Mobilisation is its own line, not something buried in the hourly rate. Georgian Bay and Muskoka distances are real and we would rather show them than hide them.
Attachment changes on site
No second visit
The quick-attach is the point of this machine: augering, grading and hauling can all happen on the same visit.
Ground protection
Where the route needs it
Loaded passes over lawn or interlock are planned before they happen, not apologised for afterwards.

Before we roll

  • Access measured — the narrowest gate, gap or lane the machine has to pass.
  • Ground condition agreed — lawn, septic bed, new sod and soft spring ground are settled before the day, not discovered on it.
  • Somewhere for the spoil — off site, stockpiled, or spread. It has to go somewhere.
  • Locates cleared where anything is being dug (Ontario One Call — five business days).

HST shown as its own line. Price honoured as quoted.

How it is sold

By the hour, with a minimum and the float shown separately.

WHAT MOVES IT

Distance from the drop to the work face, and how many times the route has to be run.

Also part of — Stonework

Our own stonework is the hardest carrying we do. The machine is why we can bid bigger stone than a crew with barrows.

Stonework & Masonry

Sheet A-515 — Typical job

What a typical day looks like

  • A stone delivery on the driveway and a patio going in behind the cottage.
  • Pallets forked around instead of barrowed, screenings boxed in behind them.
  • Topsoil or mulch spread on the same visit while the machine is on site.
  • The saving is a crew day of carrying, on a job that was priced with the carrying in it.

The machine is new to the business this season, so there are no record photographs filed against it yet. What is on file is the finished stonework work it feeds — 4 records below.

Before we can book it — 04 questions

A-515.01What and how much
Pallets, yards, or both — and roughly what each piece weighs if it is armour stone.
A-515.02The route
From where the truck drops to where it has to end up, and the narrowest point between them.
A-515.03Surface
Anything on the route we should not be crossing loaded: new sod, interlock, a septic bed.
A-515.04Timing
Best booked for the day the material lands, so nothing gets handled twice.

04 RECORDS

The stonework this machine feeds

These are finished stonework jobs from the book, photographed as they wrapped up. None of them were taken with the machine — it has not been here a full season yet. They are on this sheet because they are the work the machine is bought to serve: Our own stonework is the hardest carrying we do. The machine is why we can bid bigger stone than a crew with barrows.
